Flour Sack Dress
2018
wool, silk, wire
44 x 22 x 3.5"
This piece is a recreation of a basic dress from the '30s. Though it hangs on the wall, the piece is flattened as though it is lying out on a table, which is a theme I return to in many pieces: confusing the gravity of the subject by inverting it in space. The graphics that identify it as a flour sack dress are needle-felted in using a red suggestive of old blood.
Both autobiography and history, this piece recalls the Great Depression and how people survived and made the best of what they had. These stories of desperation and endurance feature prominently in my family history. Its gothic look and drama evoke American history, especially the histories of the South and Mid-West.
