Cloud
2020
wool, silk, wire, steel
54 x 78 x 1"
This piece depicts a moody cloud, threatening to unleash all manner of storms on us. In the rippling currents of the cloud are electric rainbows, bouncing as though they are flying fish. The rainbows seem to jump up in the stream of the cloud - again playing with gravity and reversing our sense of direction.
For me, color is an evocative of life and I use the spectrum (because the "rainbows" I use are not always the scientific rainbows of prisms or specific rainbows of politics) to convey vibrancy & diversity...a healing, energizing electricity.
Made in 2020 at the time of a bitter political contest in the United States, the piece was a call-to-arms to fight back against the storm in the election.
